The Benefits of Aromatherapy

The Benefits of Aromatherapy

You’ve probably heard the term “aromatherapy” before, and if you’re like most people, you might not have much of a clue as to what that really means. Can smells really reduce stress? Help you sleep better? The answer to these questions: Yes! Aromatherapy is a safe and convenient way to incorporate relaxation rituals into your daily routine. Dedicating a moment out of your day to slowing down, stimulating the senses, and doing some self care can ease feelings of anxiety and depression, which can help you sleep better and improve overall quality of life.

What does science say?

By incorporating aromatherapy into those routines, you are stimulating your olfactory senses (the sensory system for smelling). In doing so, your smell receptors will send messages to certain parts of the brain, such as the limbic system. The limbic system is linked to the production of emotions and feelings of stress. Research has also shown that the olfactory system has the strongest link to the hippocampus and amygdala. These are the areas of the brain responsible for memory and emotion. Certain smells can be very nostalgic for many, which can trigger emotional responses. Smelling soothing, aromatic scents can reduce tension and stress, as your brain produces feel-good chemicals such as serotonin to boost your overall mood. Adding a few drops of essential oils into your bath (after properly diluting), or reading a book in bed with your diffuser on, can help you achieve exactly this.

We recommend using Base Essentials Be Calm pure essential oil blend, our Be Sleepy pure essential oil blend, or our Be-reath Deeply pure essential oil blend to hold your own aromatherapy session. With the Base Essentials Be You pack, we have made it easy for you to enjoy a range of oils for when you want to be happy and focused, or calm and sleepy. Lavender oil is also a great option if you are looking for a single, pure scent. You can even mix oils together to make your own unique combination! We believe it's important to find a scent that works for you. Using your Base Essentials Ultrasonic Ceramic Diffuser, you can experiment with a couple of oils from the Base Essentials BASE Kit, composed of the most popular single oils.

Essential oils are a great way to curate a soothing space that ignites your senses and brings you back to your base. Aromatherapy and its many mood-related benefits is a great place to start.
